What Your Sales Team and "Tommy Boy" May Have In Common

In the movie "Tommy Boy", Big Tom Callahan of Callahan Auto (the company's top salesperson) dies, taking his sales volume with him.

Leaving the company leaderless and on the brink of bankruptcy, his son Tommy Boy, a lighthearted goof ball, embarks on a road trip in hopes of selling enough brake pads to save the company.

ONE PROBLEM: THERE ISN'T A TRAINING SYSTEM IN PLACE WHEN BIG TOM DIES.

So what does Tommy Boy have to do? He's forced to "WING IT" - completely unprepared.

Of course, comedy ensues. Which makes for a funny movie, but many companies would find themselves in the same position, God forbid...

Now, instead - imagine a scenario where you arrive to your appointment ON TIME, and the following steps just naturally unfold...

Step 1: You have a proper introduction, including a commitment to an agenda that the homeowner not only commits to, but is excited about participating in, then...

Step 2: You perform an effective needs assessment that reveals their rash, or ITCH, that needs to be scratched ensuring they need what you sell.

Step 3: You measure WITH your prospect(s) to show them WHY they itch. Then...

Step 4: Your Company Credentials are shared revealing that they would have ZERO HESITATION in hiring you to do the work, WHEN THE TIME COMES to replace. Then...

Step 5: You masterfully show the prospect(s) feature by feature HOW your product will scratch them where they itch, making them whisper to each other: "I WANT THAT!"

Step 6: You explain the price ONE TIME, so you won't have to apologize for the quality FOREVER! (Zig Ziglar) Then...

Step 7: You find a payment option that they tell you fits within the budget. You offer a cash AND finance option, and they select an affordale payment option "IF" they decide to buy.

***AT THIS POINT, HAVEN'T YOU EARNED THE RIGHT TO (AT LEAST) ASK FOR THE SALE? After all, you ARE a salesperson, aren't you?

IF YOU FOLLOWED THE ABOVE EFFECTIVELY, IS IT REALLY HIGH PRESSURE? Or are you simply SCRATCHING ANOTHER ITCH!

From here, steps 8 and 9 are just giving the customer what they want.

When implemented correctly, closing is the natural conclusion to this sales process.
